Freight  Consolidation For Norwich     Portal.jpg

Norwich is a thriving regional city, combining a major commercial, retail and tourist centre with a contemporary medieval city that boasts a rich historic, cultural and architectural heritage. Much of the central road system is not well suited to use by large goods vehicles and several streets have restrictions on vehicle access.

The PortalNorwich Freight Consolidation Centre aims to reduce the number of goods vehicles delivering into the city. It is one of a number of measures that were originally implemented in Norwich as part of the European Union CIVITAS initiative for cleaner and better transport in cities.  PortalNorwich has the potential to deliver significant benefits to businesses and to the general public in the city and surrounding area.

Benefits to business in Norwich:

  • Helping to reduce congestion
  • Allowing more frequent deliveries
  • The opportunity for a single consolidated delivery from a number of suppliers
  • Offering more convenient delivery times
  • The potential to reduce stockholding in store, warehouse or factory
  • The potential to increase retail space or production space
  • The option for out of hours delivery (early and late)
  • Making the city even more attractive to business, residents, visitors and shoppers

Benefits to people in Norwich:

  • Deliveries in "clean" low emission vehicles to improve air quality
  • Consolidation means fewer vehicles delivering into the city centre which in turn gives:
    • A reduction in goods vehicle movements
    • Less congestion, Improved traffic flow
    • Improved journey times
    • A reduction in noise pollution
    • A reduction in carbon emission
    • Reduced wear and tear on the city roads

Norfolk County Council and Norwich City Council have selected Foulger Transport to develop and operate the PortalNorwich Freight Consolidation Centre.
